Julie Miller
A long-time darling of neo-Nashville insiders, singer/songwriter Julie Miller got her start in music as a Contemporary Christian artist in her native Texas. Making her debut at a teenager in Austin, she released a spate of top-shelf CCM albums, including Orphans & Angels and Meet Julie Miller before relocating to Nashville with her singer/songwriter/guitarist husband Buddy Miller. After Buddy, a regular sideman for Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle, released his solo debut, 1996's Your Love and Other Lies, Julie broke away from the gospel fold to record Blue Pony on High Tone in 1997. An incredible slice of classic country and folky rock, the album was head-and-shoulders above anything produced by the Nashville hit machine at the time. Along with a strong melodic sense and an engaging "little girl" style of singing, Julie is a stellar songwriter with songs covered by Harris, husband Buddy, pop country megastars Brooks & Dunn and Nashville newcomer Lee Ann Womack. Her latest record, last year's Broken Things, was better than her first and featured guest shots from Buddy, Harris, Steve Earle, fellow alt-country sweetheart Victoria Williams and NRBQ bassist Joey Spaminato. |
