Kina
This Detroit native first made a name for herself in 1995, when one of the original members of R&B trio Brownstone bowed out of the group due to health problems. Kina stepped in, toured and performed on Brownstone’s second album, Still Climbing (1997). She then left the group to go solo, revamping her smooth-soul style and going in a more rock ‘n’ roll influenced direction, conjuring comparisons to Tina Turner and Macy Gray. Her self-titled debut, released in 2000, spawned the aggro-grrl hit, “Girl From The Gutter.” |

The “girl from the gutter” isn’t always pissed off, as illustrated by this feel-good affirmation of self.
