Shelly Thunder
Part of a late-‘80s crop of female dancehall artists like Sister Carol and Sweet Tee, who got tired of taking crap from tough-talking, misogynist male chatters, New Yorker Shelly Thunder has been a strong voice in reggae for more than decade. Born Michelle Harrison, Thunder made noise early with her 1988 smash “Kuff,” which humorously suggested wayward men ought to be smacked around a bit. Follow-up singles included “Small Horse Woman” and “Man Ah Rush Me,” and Thunder made her major label debut in 1991, with production by rapper KRS-One. All three of the aforementioned singles turned up on a 1996 album of Thunder’s greatest hits, and she reaffirmed her close ties to the hip-hop community by producing and duetting on the track “Forgive Them Father,” which appeared on ex-Fugee Lauryn Hill’s Grammy winning solo debut album in 1998. |
