Welcome !
    Elvis Costello
Angry young man. Acerbic Pop Purveyor. Caustic middle-aged crooner. Declan Patrick McManus, best known to music fans as the outspoken, rebellious, and envelope-pushing music visionary Elvis Costello, vaulted into the limelight with the groundbreaking 1977 album debut, My Aim Is True. The disc's title literally defines Costello's subsequent three decades as a recording artist; to this day, the single-minded artist's uncompromising commitment to his craft -- despite mixed response from the industry, critics, and the fans -- does, in fact, remain true.

Even though his first hit single, "Alison," introduced a deceptively gentle Costello to the mainstream, the artist quickly distinguished himself as the brash and outspoken poster boy for the post-punk New Wave generation. His national TV debut came during the second season of Saturday Night Live when he was tapped to replace the freshly-dissolved Sex Pistols. True to form, he caused an uproar when he defied producer Lorne Michaels' request to perform "Less Than Zero" in favor of the industry-bashing "Radio, Radio."

Costello proved he was no fluke by following his almost universally acclaimed debut with arguably two of the greatest albums of the '70s -- 1978's This Year's Model and 1979's nearly perfect Armed Forces, the latter featuring the enduring anthem "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love and Understanding." In the 80s, Costello's visionary work is distinguished by 1985's brilliantly experimental Imperial Bedroom and 1986's edgy Blood and Chocolate. As Costello evolved from new wave angst peddler to angry young pop icon to alt-rock's elder statesman, his work became slightly less consistent but no less challenging and interesting. As the '90s unfurled, Costello explored soundtrack scores in the UK, as well as fascinating collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, Aimee Mann, and Burt Bacharach.

The quality that has been the hallmark of Elvis Costello's recording and performing career is his almost fearless pursuit for free expression with no regard for the opinions of others. With an almost thoughtful disregard for the effects on his career, Elvis Costello continues to make important music in a completely unique and satisfying fashion.
