40 Grit
For a relatively young band, 40 Grit has enjoyed surprising success. Originally hailing from Concord (near Oakland), CA, the band formed in 1997 and built a name for itself in San Francisco's East Bay area music scene. Sticking with the throttling, brutal metal of old-school thrash bands like Testament, rather than the more radio-friendly hip-hop metal, 40 Grit is made up of vocalist/guitarist James Santiago, guitarist Chris Anderson, bassist Kevin Young and drummer Mike Bennett. Through intensive touring and a reputation for high-octane live shows, the band became a much sought after opening act for bands like the Anthrax side-project Stormtroopers of Death and Soulfly and received high praise from metal magazines like "Kerrang!" and "Metal Maniacs." The band opened the Milwaukee Metalfest in 1998 and was named "Best Unsigned Band" by Germany's "Rock Hard" magazine. Santiago and Young performed on S.O.D.'s return album Bigger Than the Devil and 40 Grit played Holland's Dynamo Festival in 1999, an event unheard of by an unsigned band. Their debut album, Heads, hit the shelves in 2000. |
