Gene
There is no shame in being a singles band, especially when a band is successful in that niche, and Gene can wear that crown with pride. The English quartet began in 1993 when vocalist Martin Rossiter left his band Drop, and a car accident closed the book on the band Spin (featuring guitarist Steve Mason and drummer Matt James). Bassist Kevin Miles joined Mason and James when they were ready to play again -- with the addition of Rossiter they became Gene. The band released three singles in 1994-95, earning NME's Single of the Week, No. 1 Indie Single, and Top 40 status in rapid succession. 1995 saw the release of Gene's debut album, Olympian -- the title track became the band's biggest single, and led to their being named Band of the Year by NME. The next two years found Gene touring relentlessly and continuing to release singles at a healthy clip, racking up more Top 20 hits along the way. Gene's sophomore album, Drawn to the Deep End, hit the racks in 1997, which spawned two more Top 30 singles, and the third album, Revelations, followed the year after. With the release of the single “Fill Her Up” (from Revelations), Gene had managed to notch ten consecutive Top 40 singles in the UK. They released the live Rising for Sunset in Summer 2000. |
