Sixpence None The Richer
The genesis of this Christian-oriented rock outfit (named after a passage from C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity) came in 1989, when core members Matt Slocum and Leigh Bingham met at a church retreat in Texas. Hooking up with small indie, R.E.X., they released The Fatherless And The Widow (1993) and This Beautiful Mess (1995), while building a grassroots following through rigorous touring. Their breakthrough came in 1998, after relocating to Nashville, and hooking up with new label, Squint. Their self-titled third LP, released in 1998, garnered a Grammy nod and spawned the hit single, “Kiss Me,” heard on the soundtrack to the teen comedy She’s All That. While Sixpence None The Richer continue to infuse their lyrics with spiritually-minded messages, they steer clear of the overt bible-thumping of some of their contemporary Christian peers. |
