When filmmaker and fan Gus Van Sant requested permission to use some of Smith's music in Good Will Hunting, things really started to pick up for the singer/songwriter. Smith offered the song "Miss Misery" to Van Sant for the movie, which ended up getting an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
