Cracker
Formed in 1991 by former Camper Van Beethoven leader David Lowery, Cracker was a considerable about-face from his previous band: Whereas CVB became legendary on the college-radio circuit for their eclectic instrumentals and ironic pop songs like "Take The Skinheads Bowling," Cracker came off like a bar-hardened rock band. Sure, Lowery's twisted sense of humor still surfaced in more than a few of his new songs, but it usually took a backseat to meaty guitar riffs -- courtesy of axe-slinger Johnny Hickman -- and the sort of lyrical perspective that anyone (and not just collegiate stoners) could relate to. The band's big breakthrough came in 1993, when Kerosene Hat, their second album, sold 500,000 copies on the strength of "Low," its MTV-approved hit single. Cracker's sales figures have dipped somewhat since then, but the band still continues to record and tour on a regular basis. Garage D'Or, a two-CD set of hits, live tracks, and rarities, was released in early 2000. |

Alternative, Rock |
David Lowery's probably sung it ten thousand times, but this gutsy live version proves that Cracker's biggest hit has aged better than most relics from the alternative era.
