DJ Icey
Growing up in central Florida during the ‘80s meant being exposed to various and disparate influences for dance music maven DJ Icey. The stylistic mélange available to an enterprising music aficionado ran the gamut from Scritti Polliti style new wave to the incipient hip-hop movement fronted by Run DMC and company. The ‘90s soon saw Icey kicking off his DJ career in Orlando, his tastes broadening to include the fresh sounds that became the seed for today’s sophisticated electronica … acid house, Chicago deep house, Latin Freestyle, and of course, the bombastic and sexy Miami Bass sound. Taking up a DJ residency at The Edge, Icey induced the Chemical Brothers to play their first U.S. show at the club in ’93. After the club’s demise, he hit the road, spinning the wickedest beats and breaks at various clubs, soon establishing a strong rep across the country. This notoriety led to a 14-track compilation of mixed non-stop dance music titled The Funky Breaks. Icey also runs his own indie dance music label called Zone Records. |
