The Gap Band
A legend in the Soul/R&B genre, the Gap Band has sustained a loyal following since the mid 70’s. The band of seven took their name from the initials of three streets -- Greenwood, Archer and Pine -- in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, rising to the mainstream music scene with the electro-funk style that dominated the Dance/Soul scene of the mid-late 70’s. Led by three brothers, Charles, Ronnie and Robert Wilson, the Gap Band hit the R&B Top 10 with “Shake” in 1977, and continued to record hits throughout the 80’s, including “Steppin' (Out),” “Oops, Up Side Your Head,” “Burn Rubber (Why Do You Wanna Hurt Me),” and “Party Train.” Like Earth, Wind & Fire, the Gap Band is an icon in the Soul/R&B scene for their longevity and uncanny ability to modify their style to new audiences. They’ve even had a short stint in Hollywood, recording the theme song to the film I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, a satire of blaxploitation films. |
