Sauce
Unlike most of their punk and ska loving South Bay bretheren, San Pedro, California's, Sauce has built its reputation not on one genre of music, but on their ability to turn their incredibly eclectic influences (Dylan, the Dead, Violent Femmes, Neil Young) into some of the most tuneful, incendiary rock 'n roll of the last decade. Originally formed from the wreckage of a band called Speedbump by Croation-American brothers Brian Karmelich (vocals guitar) and Mark Karmelich (guitar, vocals, keyboards, harp) and singer/drummer Jim Hudson, the group spent much of the '90s gigging throughout Los Angeles, building their fanbase and a reputation for out-of-control live shows, awesome songwriting, and stellar musicianship. 1997 was a year of big changes for the band; after recording 1997's The Cake Bake Disaster, the group parted ways with original bassist Chris Newton (he was ultimately replaced by Chris Sweeney), and Hudson abdicated the drum throne to assume a more full-time role as frontman -- new boy Anthony Arvizu assumed the drumseat. The group released the pithily titled Sauce, Where Are You Going in 1999, amidst rumors that their split was imminent. But a sudden burst of heartland indie radio play jumpstarted the group again. In 2000, with their first national tour in the works, the group seemed poised to finally reap the rewards of their years of work. Viva Sauce! |
