Down to Earth
In the new millennium, do six guys regular guys have a chance in hell of climbing from a basement practice space to the top of the music heap? If they are called Down To Earth, the answer just might be HELL YEAH! The Fairfax, Virginia sextet boasts an eclectic assortment of influences, primarily funk, funk, and more funk, reggae, dancehall, swing, ska, rap, jazz, and a solid helping of good old fashioned classic rock, courtesy of guitarists Scott Meyers and Daniel Domiquez. Amazingly, the group’s songs segue seamlessly between all of these disparate styles -- sometimes all in the space of a few bars. How do they meld these influences from the four corners of the musical world? This critic can’t say, but one thing’s for sure -- from head bangin’ to steady skankin’, ya boys here got it covered!
The secret of Down To Earth’s regional success? The band members themselves will tell you that it’s based on simple principles -- friendship, mutual respect and admiration, culture, nature, and music. First formed in 1996 through an ongoing basement jam session, the group went through countless evolutions and refinements over the years, finally finding their groove in the summer of ’99 with the addition of vocalist/rapper Mookie Thornton, and keyboardist Aaron Nugent, whose songwriting skills and strident vocals gave them a new focus. Set on a hair trigger and ready to blow up big time, Down To Earth’s Musicblitz Exclusive, “Sheeba,” is all you need to hear to understand why we say -- DTE is da bomb! |
