Creed
Florida-bred multi-platinum rock act Creed has come a long way since founding members Scott Stapp (vocals) and Mark Tremonti (guitars) first became acquainted in high school more than a decade ago. Losing contact after graduation, the duo linked up again in Tallahassee after several years and put their band into action in the mid-90s with the addition of bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips. The band’s spiritually themed hard rock – Stapp’s dad was a Pentecostal minister – struck an immediate nerve, drawing a large local following. After landing a record deal through BMG affiliate Wind-Up, the group released it’s debut My Own Prison in June of ’97. On the strength of four #1 rock radio hits – “My Own Prison,” “Torn,” “What’s This Life For,” and “One” – the group sold five million albums. A follow-up, Human Clay, entered the US album survey at #1 in September 1999, going on to move eight million units and yielding the radio staples “Higher,” “What If,” and the smash ballad “With Arms Wide Open.” In 2000, Marshall quit the band and Brett Hestla was announced as his temporary replacement. Late in the year, the group earned Group Of The Year and Song Of The Year honors, among others at VH1’s “My Music” Awards, plus they were named Rock Artist Of The Year for the third year in a row at the Billboard Music Awards. |
