Sleater-Kinney
Named for a major thoroughfare in Olympia, Washington, Sleater-Kinney started as a side project by two figures in the riot grrrl scene. A classically trained pianist, Carrie Brownstein took up the guitar after hearing the female-powered music emerging from Olympia, particularly the trio Heavens to Betsy. Brownstein began a correspondence with H2B singer/guitarist Corin Tucker, and was inspired to form her own group, Excuse 17. The two friends decided to collaborate on a few songs, and enlisted Misty Farrell, the first of Sleater-Kinney’s several drummers. The resulting recordings appeared as a seven-inch single and in a compilation by the label Villa Villa Kula. It was their song “I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone” from their second album, Call the Doctor, that enlarged their following beyond a dedicated cult. A potent blend of punk-rock, politics, and an increasingly assured live show also earned Sleater-Kinney critical acclaim. By the time of recording their third album, Dig Me Out, on the label Kill Rock Stars, they’d found a permanent drummer, Janet Weiss (also half of indie-pop masterminds Quasi). The Hot Rock followed in 1999. |
