Self
Self is largely a showcase for the songwriting skills of Matt Mahaffey, a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Something of a child prodigy, Matt was writing songs by age 4, was in his first garage band, Blade, by 9 or 10, and was playing drums professionally at age 12. Becoming involved in home recording after obtaining a four-track recorder and sampler while still in high school, the project that would become Self was already in Matt's mind by the time he began college at Middle Tennessee State. Combining a love for pop, hip-hop, lounge, and psychedelia, Matt released his debut album, Subliminal Plastic Motives, in 1995. The album was a critical success and earned Self a significant cult following, and Matt recruited guitarist Mike Mahaffey, keyboardist Chris James, bassist Mac Burrus, and drummer Jason Rawlings to take the Self sound on the road, opening for the likes of 311 and Cracker. Coming off the tour, Self released a limited edition album, 1997's The Half-Baked Serenade, before setting to work on the "proper" follow-up, 1999's Breakfast With Girls. The year 2000 saw Self release of an ambitious concept project, Gizmodgery. Performed entirely on toy instruments (including baby rattles, a toy piano, a Muppets drum kit, and voice boxes from stuffed animals), the album transcends the novelty factor one would expect to find in such a project, instead taking the limits of the instruments as a challenge; one that Self is more than up to meeting. |

This song may be performed entirely on toy instruments, but Self clearly isn't just playing around -- this is an ambitious, full-on rocker!
