Mr. T Experience
Long before certain bands made it cool to dye your hair day-glo The Mr. T Experience as busy creating the East Bay pop-punk scene that eventually yielded breakthrough acts Green Day and Rancid. Hailing from the “wrong side” of the San Francisco bay, the group was founded by guitarist Dr. Frank in 1985. Putting on shows in garages, basements and pizza parlors the three piece group quickly made a reputation for themselves with a clever, tongue-in-cheek brand of grungy surf-punk that stood in contrast to San Francisco’s violent and dead serious traditional punk bands. Their first album, Everyone’s Entitled To Their Own Opinion, was issued in 1986, and included gems like “Danny Partridge Got Busted.” Signing with the Rough Trade label several albums followed over the next decade including Night Shift At The Thrill Factory (1988) and Milk Milk Lemonade (1992). In 1994 the band was in danger of going extinct due to membership attrition. Fortunately, Dr. frank bumped into bassist Joel Reader who had been playing along to MTX songs since the age of 11. Jym, who replaced the group’s original drummer a year earlier, rounded out the line-up as they threw themselves into touring and recording their classic album Love Is Dead (1996). Recently, and in keeping with their high turn over policy, Gabe has replaced Joel on bass. Forever to be known as the only punk band to ever use the word “querulous” in a song, some say MTX is too clever, intelligent and literate to reach mass acceptance. Perhaps their upcoming Lookout Records release The Miracle Of Shame (September 2000) will prove the doubters wrong. |
