The Wallflowers
The irony behind the success of the Wallflowers is that they have managed to succeed not because of, but despite the looming legend of a superstar dad. Jakob Dylan is the youngest of five children raised by Bob Dylan and his former wife Sara Lowndes -- and thanks to his father’s reticence to discuss personal matters in interviews, he was able to avoid the intense scrutiny that plagues the lives of many celeb offspring. Jakob and guitarist Tobi Miller began playing as the Wallflowers in Los Angeles in 1989. Hooking up with drummer Peter Yanowitz, keyboardist Rami Jaffeem, and bassist Barrie Maguire, the group began gigging around the Los Angeles area at various hole-in-the-wall night spots. Jakob refused to let promoters use his family name, toughing it out as just another newcomer to L.A.’s club scene. Eventually signing to Virgin Records, the group released their self-titled debut album in 1992. Despite good reviews and tour slots with Cracker and 10,000 Maniacs, the record bombed, selling less than 40,000 copies. Signing to Interscope Records, Dylan and Jaffeem’s revamped version of the band released Bringing Down The House in 1996. The single “6th Avenue Heartache” was a major radio hit, scoring two Grammy nominations, and selling over 3 million copies. The group’s 3rd album, Breach, was released in October 2000. |
