Welcome !
    P.O.D.
Stepping right into the big-time, eclectic San Diego metal-rap quartet P.O.D. (Payable On Death) played its first show as an opener for Face to Face. But the 1992 gig was notable for another reason: vocalist Sonny Sandoval spent the entire time with his back to the audience. Thank goodness guitarist Marcos is understanding -- and drummer Wuv is also Sandoval’s cousin -- otherwise the rapper’s stage fright might’ve lost him his job. Eight years later, he’s gotten over his jitters while developing his rap skills. The bandmembers’ patience with Sonny’s learning curve is just one element of their decidedly spiritual attitude towards music; despite their dreadlocks, tattoos, and piercings, all four members of P.O.D. (which also includes bassist Traa) are ardent and outspoken Christians. In the materialistic rock arena, spiritual conviction can make it difficult for a band to find an audience and a label. P.O.D. never had much trouble with the former, and to solve their problems with the latter, they formed their own label, Rescue Records, in 1993. After three self-released records, one of which sold 30,000 copies -- a phenomenal amount for an independent release -- P.O.D. signed to Atlantic in summer, 1998. A few months later, The Warriors EP (named after the loosely affiliated teams of fans around the country who locally promoted P.O.D. concerts), appeared on Christian indie Tooth & Nail. The record contained demos for the quartet’s 1999 major-label debut, Fundamental Elements of Southtown, produced by Howard Benson (Motorhead, Sepultura). After the album certified gold, P.O.D. remastered and re-released an earlier album, Snuff the Punk.
