Apples In Stereo
Robert Schnieder is just one of the mad geniuses behind the aggregation of lo-fi indie bands with baroque pop fascinations that have inhabited the Elephant 6 label since the early ‘90s. Schneider’s band, the delightfully retro/amazingly contemporary Apples In Stereo has expanded its own sonic and philosophical possibilities with each successive release, just as Schneider has made an impact on other Elephant 6 bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control. After an eponymous EP as simply the Apples in 1994, Schneider added “in stereo” to detour problems away from other bands in the “apple” category. Newly christened, the Apples In Stereo debuted the band’s first full-length album, Fun Trick Noisemaker, in 1995, drawing comparisons to the Beatles, Brian Wilson, and Phil Spector. A singles/rarities collection, Science Faire, hit in 1996 (the same year that Schneider produced Olivia Tremor Control’s Dusk at Cubist Castle), and was followed by the more polished pop of Tone Soul Evolution in 1997. 1999’s gorgeous, conceptual, and much-too-short Her Wallpaper Reverie set the stage for the Apples’ most ambitious and realized piece to date, The Discovery of the World Inside the Moone (2000). |
