Dave Hollister
The son of two preachers, Dave Hollister was one of 12 kids, raised in the rough and rugged West Side section of Chicago. He sang and played organ in dad’s church, but his mind was on hustling, which ultimately resulted in drama with the law.
Once he cleaned up his act, he toured as a background singer with gospel great Vanessa Bell Armstong and his brother-in-law, R&B balladeer Glenn Jones. He caught the ear of Puff Daddy, which led to collabs with 2pac, Patti LaBelle and Mary J. Blige. His big break, however, came when he hooked up with New Jack Swinger Teddy Riley, who invited him to join his supergroup, BlackStreet. After group’s multi-platinum debut, creative and financial squabbles forced Dave to move on.
Rapper/producer Erick Sermon signed Dave as a solo artist to his Def Squad label, distributed through DreamWorks; the singer’s debut, Ghetto Hymns, was the imprint’s first release. True to its title, the LP merged kickin’ beats with smooth singing and lyrics about the ups and downs of the love in the ‘hood, putting him in good company with artists like D’Angelo. |

R&B |
The song for everyone who’s met an old flame and gotten to say, “Sorry, baby -- I’m hitched.” Crystal-clear vocals and a gospelish big finish from the ex-Blackstreet-er.

R&B |
Smooth grooves and thoughtful lyrics are a welcome reprieve from the gratuitous and overtly sexual plotlines running rampant in popular R&B. Take care of your soul and listen up.

R&B |
Dave uses his vocal power to make a convincing case that he tried to do his lady right -- more convincing, unfortunately, than the by-the-numbers R&B ballad behind him.
